Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of fennel seed extraction in infantile colic.
Design: Randomized placebo-controlled trial.
Settings: Two large multi-specialty clinics.
Subjects: 125 infants, 2 to 12 weeks of age, who met definition of colic, total of 121 infants completed the study.
Duration: 7 days trial.
Intervention: 0.1% Fennel seed extraction compared with placebo.
Outcome measure: Relief of colic symptoms, defined as decrease of cumulative crying to less than 9 hours per week.
Conclusion: Fennel seed extraction is effective in reducing the intensity of infantile colic.
